NEXT GENERATION NCLEX Practice Questions

NEXT GENERATION NCLEX Practice Questions | Changes coming April 1, 2023

The National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) is the standardized test used to determine whether a nursing candidate is qualified to become a licensed registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN). The NCLEX has been in use for decades, but in April 2023, significant changes to the test will take effect. In this blog post, we’ll discuss the next generation NCLEX changes and what they mean for nursing candidates.

What is the Next Generation NCLEX

The Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) is the latest version of the NCLEX, designed to better measure a candidate’s ability to think critically and make sound clinical judgments. The new test is designed to be more interactive and engaging, using a variety of item types to assess a candidate’s knowledge and skills. Some of the key changes to the test include:

  1. Use of “hot spot” questions: These are questions that require the candidate to identify a specific area on an image.
  2. Use of “drag and drop” questions: These are questions that require the candidate to match items by dragging them to the appropriate location.
  3. Use of “extended multiple-choice” questions: These are questions that require the candidate to select more than one correct answer.
  4. Use of “enhanced alternate item types”: These are questions that may require the candidate to prioritize actions, fill in the blank, or complete a chart.

Why is the Next Generation NCLEX Being Implemented?

The NGN is being implemented to address concerns about the existing NCLEX, which has been criticized for being too focused on memorization and not enough on clinical reasoning. The NGN is designed to better measure a candidate’s ability to apply their knowledge and skills to real-world situations, which is critical for providing safe and effective patient care.

What do These Changes Mean for Nursing Candidates?

Nursing candidates preparing to take the NCLEX after April 1, 2023, will need to be familiar with the new item types and prepare accordingly. They should also expect the test to take longer, as the NGN includes more questions than the existing NCLEX.

Preparing for the NGN will require a focus on critical thinking and clinical reasoning, as well as a solid foundation of nursing knowledge. Candidates can prepare for the NGN by studying the new item types and taking practice tests that incorporate them.

In conclusion, the Next Generation NCLEX is an important development for the nursing profession, as it will better measure a candidate’s ability to think critically and make sound clinical judgments. Nursing candidates should be aware of the changes coming in April 2023 and prepare accordingly to ensure their success on the new test.

  2. Hi- someone recommended me to you. This was my 5th time with nclex rn, and I fail. Now I would have to take NGN, which I have no idea how to prepare for and what resources to use. In a post, I read that if you fail 5 times in nclex, you should think again if you can be a nurse as they said, failing 5th time means no critical thinking skills. I am so confused right now. I do not know what else to do. The only thing I worked so hard for was a nursing degree- please, can you frankly tell me what should I do? I do not know who else to ask.

    1. You passed nursing school, you are ready to be an entry level nurse. I work with some amazing nurses who failed a few times. Sometimes we fail because we don’t know how to think like the NCLEX or our test anxiety gets in the way and we spiral. Also, the next generation NCLEX is not something to fear, a lot more people will pass this exam. Please remember the scope of nursing practice has not changed and the content of the nclex has not changed. I would love to help you pass. Email me: support@nursemegrn.com
